An AI hackathon for educators

[Postponed] A half-day hackathon for educators to build their own ideas using AI

Hi hackathon registrants,

We have decided to postpone the hackathon, originally scheduled for May 20, to the summer. We were overwhelmed with interest, will let you know when we confirm a new date, and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

This event, first and foremost, is for educators -- especially the teachers working day-in and day-out in Bay Area public schools. Given the ongoing Oakland teacher's strike, we know that teachers in the Bay Area have other critical priorities right now, and we will reconvene at a time when they have the full opportunity, capacity, and time to attend.

We'll be back, and we'll keep you posted on the new date!

Sending warmth and gratitude to each of you.

The organizing crew.

-----

Join Reach Capital, TFA’s Reinvention Lab, and SchoolAI on Saturday, May 20 for a half-day hackathon. We’ll use Playlab, a platform that makes it easy for educators and students to build, remix, and share their own AI-powered tools — no technical experience required!

We’ve seen educators create everything from tools to help them design project-based learning experiences to IEP compliance tools — and we're excited to see what you'll create!

We’ll provide lunch and refreshments. All you’ll need is a laptop and some ideas!

PS. This isn't your normal Bay Area Hackathon. We're educators from diverse backgrounds interested in using AI to reinvent education. We also recognize that AI systems have limitations, including algorithmic bias. And hope to explore the possibilities & limitations with all of you.

Location: Kapor Center, 2148 Broadway, Oakland CA 94612
Time: 9am - 1pm PT

Can't make it this time? Stay tuned for future events.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have a technical background?

Not at all. One of the great things about this technology is how accessible it is to people with no technical background. If you have ideas, come meet and build with people to help make them real. We'd love to have you.

Who all is welcome?

We have a great mix founders, engineers, designers, teachers, and principals from around the country who'll be here. We are especially interested in teachers and school leaders with who care about the humanities, creativity, and magnifying relationships who want to influence how AI impacts their world. No technical experience required. If you're a builder or educator, or know one who can make it, we'd love to have you.

What do I need to bring?

We've got space, food, internet, a few tools to help build, and a great group of people. Bring a laptop and an idea you're excited to work on and you should be all set!

I can't make it. Will you be doing another one?

We're definitely planning to host more Build AI x EDU meetups and design sprints. If you can't make it but you'd like to stay tuned for more, email caleb@schoolai.com to get on the list.
